Your choice of wood species is arguably the most significant decision you will make, impacting not only the final aesthetic but also how the cabinets perform in your home.

We take pride in offering a curated selection of premium North American hardwoods. Our artisans (who you’ve seen masterfully applying finishes [link to Article 1] and cutting precision joints [link to Article 2]) respect the inherent properties of each species.

Understanding Grain, Texture, and Color Stability

Wood is a natural, varying material. To choose correctly, you must understand three key characteristics:

The Grain: This is the physical structure of the wood fibers. Grain patterns range from open and coarse (like Oak) to closed and fine (like Maple or Cherry). The grain dictates how the wood takes stain.

The Texture: Texture is the visual interplay of the grain. Some woods have dramatic, wild texture (like Hickory), while others are uniform and understated.

Color Stability: This is how the wood ages. All wood matures and changes color when exposed to UV light. A species that starts very light may dramatically darken over time (e.g., Cherry), while others (like Maple) are much more stable.

A Quick Guide to Popular Species at ACF

Here is an overview of the characteristics of the woods displayed in our workshop

Cherry (The Elegant Maturer)

Grain: Very fine, closed grain.

Character: Satin-smooth texture. Known for its rich, warm tone.

Aging: Significant. Starts as a light pinkish-brown but quickly deepens and darkens into a signature rich red-brown when exposed to light.

Best For: Classic, traditional, and transitional designs where a deep, rich wood tone is desired.

Maple (The Versatile Canvas)

Grain: Very closed, uniform, and fine.

Character: Maple has one of the smoothest textures. It is incredibly strong and hard. Because it lacks dramatic grain, it is the ideal canvas for paints and very light stains.

Aging: Highly color stable, with very minor ambering over many years.

Best For: Modern designs, painted kitchens, or anywhere you want a clean, uniform wood look.

White Oak (The Durable Modern Classic)

Grain: Open, strong, and coarse. Often features dramatic ‘flake’ or ‘fleck’ patterns depending on how it is sawn.

Character: Unmatched durability and strong character. When rift sawn (as shown in our sample), the grain is tight and linear, creating a sophisticated, high-end look.

Aging: Color stable.

Best For: Contemporary, Scandinavian, and upscale rustic designs.

Walnut (The Sophisticated Statement)

Grain: Generally straight, but can feature beautiful, wavy patterns. Fine and closed.

Character: The most dramatic and deep coloration of any North American hardwood. Rich chocolate brown to dark cocoa.

Aging: Tends to lighten slightly and gain golden undertones as it matures, opposite of Cherry.

Best For: Mid-century modern designs, libraries, bars, or kitchens making a strong, luxurious statement.

Selecting Your Vision

The wood species is the foundation.
